Pascrell Statement on Republican Tax Reform Plan
Washington, DC,
February 26, 2014
Today, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), the only member of the New Jersey delegation to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement today after Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp released the Republican proposal on tax reform: "After three years, I’m pleased to see the Republican majority finally release their tax reform plan today. Democrats and Republicans agree that our tax code needs a major overhaul that closes loopholes and makes the system more fair. I wish we could have continued the process that began with the Tax Reform Working Groups earlier this year and released a truly bipartisan product. "As a result, I have many concerns with the Republican proposal, particularly regarding its impact on low income and middle class Americans, as well as provisions important to my constituents like the proposed elimination of the deduction for New Jersey’s high property taxes and the scaling back of the mortgage interest deduction. Even though Democrats were excluded from the writing of the Republican plan, moving forward I hope to work hand in hand with my friends on the other side of the aisle to improve this bill and remove many of the harmful provisions that will hurt the middle class." # # # |
