Pascrell Announces Opposition to So-Called Balanced Budget Amendment
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) announced that he would vote against legislation being considered in the House of Representatives today to add a balanced budget requirement to the United States Constitution.
“After pouring sugar in the gas tank of the American economy, Republicans are claiming the car they wrecked can only be repaired with fiendish cuts to Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid. The Republican tax scam blew a $2 trillion hole in the deficit to lavish billions on their corporate donors. Now we’re being told the only way to protect the economy is by dismembering the social safety net. You almost have to admire the chutzpah.
“It’s difficult not to note the symbolism of this vote coming on the heels of Speaker Ryan’s announced departure. For years, Republicans have deftly played a bait-and-switch: claiming devout fealty to fighting deficits, then ignoring that allegiance in order to enrich big corporations. This vote is nothing but a publicity stunt in reaction to public rejection of their tax scam. After decades of phony fiscal piousness, Americans have had enough of the Republicans’ cynical game.”
