Pascrell Announces Teaching American History Grant For Passaic County Technical Institute
Washington, DC,
June 21, 2007
U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) today announced that Passaic County Technical Institute (PCTI) has been selected to receive a three-year $478,891 grant from the federal Department of Education’s Teaching American History Grants Program. In 2001, Pascrell voted in the House of Representatives to establish the Teaching American History Grant Program, which was later signed into law as part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. “I’m proud that our work to establish this program in Congress six years ago will directly benefit the student body at Passaic County Tech,” stated Pascrell. “As a former high school teacher, I know the importance of teaching our children the values and inspiring stories that made America. “We look forward to igniting the desire in PCTI students to develop a life-long interest in American History, the democratic process, and its impact on today’s society,” stated Chief School Administrator, Diana Lobosco. “And we are extremely thankful for the opportunity made available through the Teaching American History Grant.” The grant program is designed to raise student achievements by improving teachers’ knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of traditional American history. PCTI will use the grant to implement a program entitled, Turning Points in American History, which is designed to work with external partners to develop, implement, and strengthen student understanding in American history. Turning Points will provide fifteen PCTI American history teachers with a wealth of historical resources to enhance classroom curriculum. PCTI will partner with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the New Jersey Historical Society, William Paterson University, the Newark Museum, the New Jersey Department of Education, and Social Studies School Service to implement the Turning Points in American History program. “Many of America’s greatest stories, and turning points in our history, occurred right here in Passaic County. It is fitting that Passaic County Tech receive the federal resources to prioritize an innovative method of teaching the lessons of America’s past,” concluded Pascrell. ### |
