Rep. Pascrell Statement on Trump Tax Returns Petition Going Ignored
Washington, DC,
February 28, 2018
Today, U.S. Representative Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) gave the following statement on the White House’s refusal to acknowledge a We the People petition signed by more than a million Americans calling for the publication of Trump’s tax returns: “Despite a petition garnering more than 1.1 million signatures from Americans demanding Donald Trump release his tax returns, the White House has decided to ignore the will of the people and hide behind nonsensical excuses. The administration won’t act, so Congress must. “Republican committee chairmen have refused to lift a finger to examine Trump’s finances, ignoring the known ties between Trump associates and Russian oligarchs, massive unexplained loans from German banks, and the sale of $35 million in Trump properties to shadowy shell companies. “What financial ties exist between Trump and Russian oligarchs? Is the Trump family susceptible to bribery or blackmail? What are Trump’s conflicts of interest as he offers new proposals on taxes and foreign policy? The American people deserve answers and Congress must follow the money. No longer can congressional Republicans reject transparency in order to politically protect the President. “The Republicans’ abetting of Trump corruption remains the worst dereliction of duty I have witnessed in public life. Their continued inaction is a stain on this institution, and it must end. We must see President Trump’s tax returns now.” |
