PATERSON, NJ – Federal grant will fund rebuilding efforts at one of nation's largest wastewater treatment facilities [November 9, 2015]
In continuing to ensure New Jersey utilities rebuild stronger and better prepared following Hurricane Sandy’s destruction, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) a $1,052,630.10 federal grant to assist in recovering from the historic storm.
“Hurricane Sandy caused tremendous devastation to our region, particularly to New Jersey's utilities,” stated Pascrell. “As the result of a tidal surge overwhelming their facility, PVSC sustained widespread damage causing the interruption of services. This federal grant will make a significant investment in helping ensure PVSC is stronger and better prepared for future disasters. Wastewater treatment facilities like PVSC provide a critical service in protecting our environment and the public's health, so their recovery must continue to remain a priority.”
The federal grant will assist PVSC with the use of force account and contract to replace valves destroyed in the Primary Clarifier as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
In the days following Hurricane Sandy, Rep. Pascrell wrote to FEMA Regional Administrator Lynn Canton urging the agency to provide resources to PVSC in order to assist in resuming operations.
