Pascrell Delivers $720,000 in Federal Funding for Livingston Streetscape Project

FUNDS WILL BE SPENT ON CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT AROUND
THE INTERSECTION OF MT. PLEASANT AND LIVINGSTON AVENUES

LIVINGSTON - U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) today lauded inclusion of $720,000 for the Livingston Pedestrian/Beautification Streetscape Project in the federal transportation spending bill.  Passed by the House and Senate on July 29, 2005, the legislation renews federal funds for highway and transit programs designed to replace the expiring transportation and infrastructure programs.  President George W. Bush will sign the legislation on Wednesday, August 10.

"The Township of Livingston is committed to enhancing its community by building a safe and visually appealing downtown accessible for pedestrians," stated Pascrell, a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.  "This $720,000 federal investment will be a boon to the smart growth already underway in Livingston."

"The entire community of Livingston is extremely grateful for Congressman Pascrell's work," stated Livingston Mayor David Katz.  "The money will be spent on beautifying our community and improving our streetscapes.  It will be enjoyed by our residents for many, many years to come."

Specifically, Livingston has implemented a five phase project designed to create pedestrian friendly streets in an area that has seen extraordinary growth and suburban sprawl.  Three phases of the project, which have totaled approximately $1 million, are complete.  The $720,000 will go to towards the last two phases of the Livingston Pedestrian/Beautification Streetscape Project along Mt. Pleasant and Livingston Avenues.  Before the federal funds were announced, the expected cost for the final two phases was expected to be about $2.5 billion.

"I am confident that this federal investment will help Livingston use its vibrant economic center to build a stronger sense of community," stated Pascrell.  "It will help build walkways between businesses that will get cars off the streets.  It will promote active, healthy living by encouraging walking and safe access to shopping, restaurants and other activities."
