Pascrell Mocks Republican Book Ban Bill
Washington, DC,
March 24, 2023
U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) today strongly opposed H.R. 5, House Republicans’ dangerous book ban bill that would make it easier for rightwing extremists to meddle in schools and ban books in communities across America. “Americans should be clear that Republicans are voting today to advance a bill to make it easier to ban books,” said Rep. Pascrell. “With the Governor of Florida creating an atmosphere that has even led to bans on books about topics including Robert Clemente, Rosa Parks, and the Holocaust, Republicans in Congress want to see similar bans from coast to coast. This book ban bill is part of House Republicans’ wider ambition of poisoning our nation’s schools with radical extremism. The relentless attacks on schools are one of the most dangerous trends today and I oppose them unreservedly. House Republicans have no plans and no ideas to help the American people: all they offer is culture war bait to excite and incite the basest elements of America. Let teachers teach, let students learn facts, and let parents make decisions about their own kids. The House should leave them the hell alone.” |
