Dear Prospective Intern:

I am very pleased to learn that you are interested in applying for an internship in one of our congressional offices. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about and take part in the process of serving the public, gain useful experience, and have a great time. I hope that you will find the information provided below useful for understanding the role of interns in our office and the procedure for their selection.

In our Washington DC office, duties include helping with general office work such as sorting and filtering incoming mail, faxes, and emails; answering phones; and handling constituent correspondence. Your work may also include doing research on legislative initiatives, attending briefings, and handling other office tasks as they arise.

In our District Office in Paterson, duties include assisting with sorting and filtering incoming mail; researching special projects; working with casework supervisors to provide assistance to constituents; recording opinions of the residents of the Ninth Congressional District; assisting staff members with community outreach projects; assisting with the daily news summary; and performing general office operations such as answering phones and data entry.

Several factors go into the selection of interns for our office. I am looking for highly motivated and well-organized individuals who are enthusiastic about learning the workings of government. Strong communication and computer skills are also very important.

I also strongly advise utilizing existing internship programs offered through your college. Often, these programs allow for college credit, financial aid and housing arrangements.

Thanks for your interest in serving as a member of our office team. I hope to hear from you.
