Pascrell Statement On Alberto Gonzales

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) offered the following statement in regards to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

"President Bush must replace Attorney General Alberto Gonzales immediately.  The Attorney General's politically motivated dismissal of U.S. Attorneys is an absolute disgrace.  This latest misjudgment should be the final infraction of Mr. Gonzales's flawed two year tenure as America's top law enforcement official.  Mr. Gonzales's denial of habeus corpus rights for all Americans under the Constitution, and abuse of civil liberties under the Patriot Act have contributed to a record of injustice that is unacceptable to the American people. Mr. Gonzales surrendered the Constitution in the name of loyalty to the President, and he should be ashamed. A partisan justice system is characteristic of a banana republic, not a nation determined to spread democratic values throughout the world.

"With the recent convictions of Scooter Libby, the abysmally poor treatment of our injured veterans at Walter Reed, the careless response to Hurricane Katrina, and the mismanagement of our war in Iraq, this administration has demonstrated an unlawful, immoral, unethical and incompetent approach to governing.  The administration as a whole can ill afford to lose any more credibility with the public.  The President must act quickly to replace Alberto Gonzales with a nominee who is fully committed to upholding America's justice system free of political persuasion or partiality."
