Pascrell Reacts to Notification of Trade Talks With EU, UK, Japan

Today, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), the Ranking Member on the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade, reacted to the announcement by the Trump administration that it would seek to initiate trade negotiations with the European Union, the UK, and Japan:

“I welcome the Administration’s notification that it intends to engage in trade agreement negotiations with our allies in the European Union, United Kingdom, and Japan. These are substantial economies with whom we share many values.

“I have several questions about the objectives, scope, and process for these negotiations.  I take seriously the Administration’s numerous references to its commitment to consult and work closely with Congress in developing the objectives, positions, and staging of these negotiations.  I expect the Administration will adhere to the consultations requirements of the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) law and fully respect the constitutional mandate of the Congress in all matters of trade policy.  USTR must consult with not only me, but all interested Members of Congress and official trade advisory committee members.

“I look forward to working with Ambassador Lighthizer on trade agreements and trade policies that promote U.S. exports and boost workers’ wages and opportunities here at home.”
