TOP BENEFITS FOR NEW JERSEYANS

  • Young adults are now able to stay on their parents’ health insurance until they are 26 years old. Over 3.1 million young adults, including 73,000 young adults in New Jersey, now have health insurance as a result of the law.
  • Seniors are seeing significant improvements in their Medicare benefits, such as preventive care with no deductibles or co-pays. In 2012, 882,282 New Jerseyans with traditional Medicare used one or more free preventive service. Additionally, in 2011 and 2012, 71 million Americans with private health insurance gained preventive service coverage with no cost-sharing, including 2,209,000 New Jerseyans.
  • Seniors have access to more affordable prescription drugs. Since the law was enacted, more than 6.6 million people with Medicare have saved over $7 billion on their prescription drugs upon reaching the doughnut hole – including over $370 million in savings for New Jerseyans with Medicare. In 2012, 169,373 New Jerseyans with Medicare saved over $165 million, or n average of $977 per person.
  • Insurance companies must provide 12.7 million Americans with $1.1 billion in refunds. More than 220,000 New Jersey residents with private insurance coverage will benefit from $10.8 million in refunds from insurance companies this year, averaging $104 in refunds per New Jersey family.
  • No more lifetime limits on health benefits. Thanks to health reform, 105 million Americans no longer have a lifetime limit on their health coverage. Already, 3,274,000 people in New Jersey, including 1,214,000 women and 877,000 children, no longer have to worry about lifetime limits on coverage. The law also restricts the use of annual limits and bans them completely by 2014.
  • Insurers can no longer deny coverage to children with pre-existing conditions. As many as 3,847,727 non-elderly New Jerseyans have some type of pre-existing health condition, including 485,006 children. Health plans cannot limit or deny benefits or coverage for a child with a pre-existing condition like cancer or asthma. And starting in 2014, adults with pre-existing conditions will no longer be discriminated against by insurers. Since the program began, 1,343 New Jerseyans with pre-existing conditions have gained coverage through the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan.
  • Small businesses have access to tax credits for up to 35 percent of the cost of health insurance for their employees. In 2011, 360,000 small employers claimed the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit to help them afford health insurance for two million American workers.
